  • The trouble with scripts

    A script does what it says and no more; for anything it does not cover, it has no idea what to do — and why it was written that way is usually not recorded. Adopting automation therefore introduces a new risk of its own: nobody fully knows what those scripts will do, and nobody dares change them.

  • Rules as the basis

    Architecture standards, equipment standards, naming conventions, installation procedures, change processes, data classification policy. Revise the rules and the behaviour follows; where the rules contradict one another, the system stops and writes a report rather than guessing a method and carrying on.

  • Rules kept separate from execution

    The rules are maintained by people — readable, versioned, with stated reasons; execution belongs to the system, which must account for which revision of the rules it followed, what it did, and what resulted.
